Thought I’d do a quick review of a new pair of basketball shoes I purchased recently. These are the Nike Hyperdunk (from 2010), and they have blown me away with their lightness, flexibility, and support.
But first, a little backstory. Back in the day, I used to wear only basketball shoes. Sometime in high school, I switched over to more casual shoes, so the last pair of basketball shoes I bought were a pair of Jordan Melo M3s from sophomore year. I was still wearing those during pickup games as recently as a week ago.
Enter the Hyperdunk. I got mine for $60 off eBay (in special-edition colors, worn once or twice). Definitely not a bad deal for such a good pair of shoes.
As for looks, very sleek. A little too glossy for my taste, but I’m more about function over form. Fits like a glove. Unlike my previous Jordans, these shoes wrap comfortably around my feet, keeping them from sliding around during quick direction changes. Plus, there’s the added benefit of ankle support because these are considered mid/high shoes.
What about performance? Near flawless. These are the lightest, most comfortable basketball shoes that I’ve worn. The Hyperdunk uses “Flywire” technology, which provides strong support while taking up very little weight and space. I was skeptical at first, but after about eight hours of gym time, I’m a believer.
Only complaints: Maybe because my right foot is slightly smaller than my left (most everyone has one smaller foot, look it up), the fit has been a bit off during longer stints. I don’t see this as a problem that wearing-in the shoes wouldn’t correct.
All in all, I’m very happy with this purchase. These shoes are definitely high-performing and very comfortable. If you’re looking for great basketball shoes, I’d recommend buying a (slightly) older model that is just as effective as the newer ones, and save yourself a good amount of money in the process.
